I became a caregiver when I was cleaning houses, a lady with ALS asked me to take care of her (1992-1994), then I met another lady to take care of and I realized I liked to help people, they where happy and I was too. We became very close and good friends. Then is history, I enjoy the help I've being able to provide for more than 20 years in the San Diego area. So, I have excellent references. I like to take care of old people because I'm there just for them, I'm patient, energetic, love sports, sometimes they can do exercise with me, I cook healthy, enjoy their company, we talk, go out to have lunch or dinner, walk (when they're able to do it), we go to attend concerts, movies, visit relatives, something their own family can't do because of their own responsabilities. I really feel proud to be a caregiver because, as I said before, I'm helping people to do many things they aren't able to do anymore and they are happy and that's something I enjoy, as a result we become very good friends. When I see how happy they are I'm proud of it. The good part is they are very grateful, because they feel they can count with somebody that helps them to do what they like. When I was applying for different kind of jobs (manufacturing, warehouse) where I had more than 15 years experience, I was offer a position as caregiver of a lovely 90 years old lady, we got along since the first moment and became her part time cg. I found out that I have that special touch so much needed when working with elderly. I treat them with respect. I know it must not be easy losing your independence and if at home, seeing "strangers" coming into your house and practically take control over your stuf. That's why I like asking them (when posible) how they like things being done in their house.
