I have the wonderful privilege of assisting this elderly couple, with whom I have been friends for many years, in a variety of ways now as they are declining in health. My first experience with caregiving was at the request of an elderly friend that I become her live in caregiver as she had received a terminal illness diagnosis. I shared a home with her until she passed away. During that time I provided loving companionship, homemaking, meal preparation, transportation and emotional support. I was employed as a substance abuse counselor in the same duration. It was such a rewarding experience that I could hardly have considered it a job.
