My experiences with caregiving have been gained through experiences with my family members. It started with my mom 10 years ago, diagnosed with Alzheimer's , I became her caregiver for 2 years. Then in succession two of my sisters became sick from cancer, my middle sister is alive and well due to a bone marrow transplant, I was her caregiver, my oldest sister died fighting lung cancer and I was privileged to be her caregiver. Susie's death impacted me in a way in which I decided to shake up my life and pursue what I've always wanted to do, be with older people, so I left my job of 12 years and now work in a 6bed RCFE and I love it. I think being a great caregiver is someone who listens well and encourages people to do as much as they can for themselves and sets up the environment to accomplish success. My most favorite time of the day is when I am not toileting, showering, preparing meals, or cleaning at my work it's when I can play dominos or have tea with the residents, it's an honor to be around people who have lived so long because they have so much to teach us. My most personal achievement would have to be last year when I went to Buffalo, New York and the family realized my father in law suffering from Lewy body dementia. I was able to navigate through the system in a place where I had no contacts or knowledge of resources and managed to get him healthcare at home, hired and trained a caregiver in a week's time.
