I am a certified nursing assistant that loves my job. When I moved to Memphis in 2008, I was blessed to have an eighty nine year old patient on my wife's mail route that was put on hospice, I not only revived her as she say but I gave her that second wind by tending to all her needs while taking care of her in her neice home. I prepared her food with love, took her vitals, bathe her because she was an amputee that just needed a lot of attention. I cared for her from 9am- 9 pm seven days a week for four years and the only reason that I had to leave was because her neice lost her job and decided to put her in a nursing home because she could no longer afford the expense. It is times like these that makes me appreciate helping those who cannot help themselves.

While I've worked as a caregiver for those with Alzheimer's and dementia in an Assisted Living facility and nursing homes through caregiving businesses, it was freelance home care where I was most proud of my work. While having a worker in your home may not be an easy adjustment, empowering others to keep their lifestyle and relative independence and dignity is the most rewarding aspect of caring. Though assisted living and nursing homes have their place in our society, enabling and assisting someone in their homes is the reason I continue to return to this line of work. One of my proudest moments was helping a woman who needed extra care in a facility. She had suffered a broken hip, heart attack, and mild stroke in one week and needed constant care that the facility couldn't provide. She also suffered from Alzheimer's and needed a great deal of patience and compassion. She could be verbally abusive and many workers took what she said personally. After numerous caregivers attempted to help her, it was myself and one other worker who could serve her needs and she came to treat me as a friend. I have always considered myself a champion of empowerment and encourage folks to keep their lifestyle and personality as much as possible. So many I've cared for have taken care of their families and communities and it's an honor to be of service to those who have been of service to others throughout their lives. I imagine myself in their position and treat them how I hope to also be treated when I'm such a condition.

I became a caregiver after being raised in a broken home watching my mother raise 4 kids and care for her disabled father all at once. Watching her, and being hands on at an early age inspired me to become a caregiver. I enjoy working with and praying with the elderly or disabled and seeing the smile on their faces, giving them the reassurance that there is still God given people in this world that truly cares. I enjoy their conversations and all around just being a great help, and also the things I may learn from them.
I'm a great caregiver because I take pride in my work, I love the work that I do, and I treat people with respect, I choose this profession because I have always liked taking care of people ,especially the elderly. And I hope one day when I'm old and need assistance. I pray that God will put someone in my path that's compassionate and love their job as well as I love what I do.
