In my 14 years of experience as a Direct Care Professional, Caregiver, Group Home Manager, and a owner of a Home Care Service,I've developed a skill that was not taught to me in a college, or in some technical school. But a skill that you can learn only through hands-on experience, this skill is called Patience. Through Patience, I have the ability to talk down an angry teen when he/she is angry with the world, through patience I have the tolerance to put up with people staring at me as I try to teach a 40 year mentally disabled man how to shop for groceries, through patience I have the ability to train and redirect staff in a way that does not leave him or her feeling degraded, because of a patience I can be gentle and effective with a elderly person that needs help getting out of the bed. Patience is not simply the ability to wait - it's how we behave while we're waiting.
