To give the patient the best care possible, it is important for a caregiver to have a personal understanding of and connection with what his or her patient is going through. Being able to empathize allows the caregiver to put himself or herself in the patient's shoes, and identify and ease the patient's fears or discomfort.Patience and flexibility are qualities that every person in the caregiving industry must possess. Being a caregiver is such an honor - it's all about putting away your needs to assist others. Knowing that a smile on your face can bring joy and happiness to someone else is priceless. The moments when you can reflect back and see how you have helped someone is what caregiving is all about. Working with people in a home care setting, it is essential that a caregiver feel the desire to want to help. By showing both empathy and compassion caregivers will let the person they are caring for know that they care about the person and want to do what they can to help them. I feel most proud and blessed when I can make a difference in a child's life and as a result their family. I have been a nurse for many years so this may come in the form of just making them smile or giggle, helping them tolerate a painful procedure of nurturing a family whose child is dying. Each experience has touched my life and believe I have touched their's as well.
