About Marijo

I greatly enjoy oldsters and consider it a privilege to be of help to them. As a semi-retired, work-at-home business person and empty-nester, I have very flexible hours and can adjust my work schedule to accommodate situations as necessary. I have been caring for seniors since 2001 when my late father came to live with me. Over the past few years, I have been working part time for an agency, but would like to expand my hours.

Freelance caregiver 14+ hours a week for an 80-year-old wheelchair-bound widow with MS She lived alone and needed help with everyday chores such as shopping, cleaning, cooking and diet supervision, because she could not walk. Frequent hygiene and transfer procedures were also required. Sadly, she passed away of cancer in August 2011.

Worked part-time for Fairview Ministries’ “Home By Choice” in-house caregiving agency (Downers Grove, IL) at the large Fairview Baptist Home, mostly in the Independent Living residence, but also occasionally in the Assisted Living wing or out in the community. One of my clients through this agency had memory issues, which spurred my interest in how to better serve such oldsters; the agency procured me reading materials and classes on this subject. He passed away, then I cared consecutively for two widows who had broken arms and needed short-term assistance — then serving an elderly widow who lived at the Fairview independent living building but needed companion services at the request of her family. I was laid off when this agency was discontinued by the facility.

Duties included cleaning, shopping, driving them to/from appointments, bill paying and helping better organize their living arrangements. Left this agency to work for another, better-paying job.

Took in a 99-year-old wheelchair-bound, deaf woman who did not want to go to a nursing home but whose relatives were unable to care for her. She lived in my home, and I attended to her day and night. Duties included bathing, diapering, purchasing and administering medications and other personal products; meal preparation of soft foods; wound care and healthy skin maintenance; interacting with medical personnel who came to see her, as well as taking her to doctor appointments and assuring her overall comfort and care. She eventually had to leave because her hip replacement was rejected by her body, and she entered hospice care in a facility.
