I am not sure I "became" a care give so much as care giving comes naturally to me. Empathy is an ability, a sense perhaps, that is a gift for me; I am sensitive, observant, and enjoy connecting with others--all essential for building a good relationships and for being a good caregiver. My background is in early childhood. I was a teacher's assistant for 3 years until my father became ill. I was the only one who could help him. I quit my job and entered an amazing ten years of getting to know my father all over again, finding out surprising revelations about his past, and deepening our relationship in a new way. He needed shopping, help getting to appointments, companionship, some fun, some good food, and sometimes, a good laugh. So, I have caregiving experience on both ends of the life spectrum. My college degree is in English with a minor in psychology. I was headed toward a degree in social work when I became pregnant with my first child. The degree never materialized, but two more children did! I was a stay-at-home mom until I started working in the Early Childhood Program at my children's school. I am reliable, kind, and attentive.
