I fell into caregiving when it became necessary to care for my Dad in his final years. I found I loved caring for him, seeing him find meaning in his later years. I always looked for little ways to make his life happier and easier. As a great problem solver I was able to take those skills and apply it to my clients. I'd had a hint I might enjoy it after helping my Dad care for my Mom in her last years. For me it's all about the client. I'd try to diffuse embarrassing situations, find laughter in life and most of all give them dignity. One key skill I learned was the importance of giving seniors choices. It helps them to feel in control again. Another is to try to assess what they need as I did with my dementia patient to eliminate her anxiety.
