About Kelly

I'm not sure what led me to start my first job at Heartland Residential Care but that was were I found my nact and love as far as a job. U found it so rewarding to be able to help someone whom without me couldn't do it themselves. But in 2010 I got breast cancer. And as I was going thru the process of treatment, I was so sick but I had no one to help care for me. I realized how important just how wonderful it would have been to have a little help. So now I've been cancer free soon it will be six yrs. I have #1 realized how important it is to have someone whom you can depend on and #2 I feel I beat cancer and it's time to make my life count. If I can just help one person out there that needs a helping hand. Whether it is maybe cooking them a meal, cleaning the floors or just be an ear for someone to talk to. I want to be able to come home from my workday feeling that just maybe I've made a difference in someone's life that day. It's a satisfaction that I just can't explain.

Caregiver/ Med Tech

Our Lady Of Mercy
My job was to first get meds ready for about 25-30 residents. Many had medication they took before dinner. There were also a couple of residents whom had diabetes and I would check their blood sugar depending on what the reading depended if they had an insulin shot before or after dinner. I then would help escort everyone down for dinner. While residents were eating dinner I would go around and make sure everyone was ok and if there was any assistance they might need or just sit and talk with them. After dinner I would escort everyone back upstairs so everyone could go to their rooms or they could just stay around with me and once again we would engage in conversation. I had a beeper if anyone needed assistance I would go and help them. I then would get their medication ready before they went to bed. Then I would have maybe a couple of hours before my shift ended and once again answer the beeper if someone needed assistance.

Synergy Home Care
I'm currently still working with Synergy. I have 3 regular clients. I work M-F with one 2hrs a day $12.50 an hour. My second client is M-W-F 3hrs a day at $9.00 an hour for a total of 17 hrs a week. When I first started it so happened that they didn't have enough workers and my hrs went from 17 to 42 a week. Since then they hired more workers and my regular hours are just 17. I need more hours than that. They have told me for the last 2weeks that they would have more work for me but still no more hrs have come by way. I'm very dependable, hard worker. I believe in treating others as I would want to be treated. To also give the respect that one deserves. I'm currently looking for evening hours. Just 2-3 hours in the evening. My current duties are from light housekeeping, running errands, laundry, or playing cards or sitting and doing puzzles. Or just sitting and engaging in conversation. I have also had the pleasure with working with an Alzheimer client. All my clients currently I engage with have some memory challenges. Soon there will be a background check available.

Heartland Residential Care
I first started out working Sat-Sun 16 hours each day 8am-12am. I was part of a team who took care of 13 non ambulatory teens. I helped cook, feed, bathe, change their diapers, clothes basically tended to their every need. I also would play with all of them. Then I was offered a M-F 8am-5pm job taking care of one resident who was to old to go school like the rest. My job duties were still the same but with just one resident. I also made out breakfast, lunch and dinner menu's and went to the grocery store. Before I started the job I went thru first aide classes which I passed got a license but since then it has expired. I also took a medication class and had a Med tech license which also has expired.

I took care of both of my parents. I love being around their wisdom. They think i'm funny and fun to be with. I would rather be around older people. Aways have since I was little. Guess it started in childhood since that's what we had living around us in our neighborhood.! And feel very blessed that its a calling too. I love talking and most of all listening to my clients. I'm very patient and dependable with a Big Heart.!

When I was young I lived on a dead end street. The only people on the street were seniors. I took it upon myself as a 6 year old child to go visit them. My parents also thought that was "different" for a child of that age. That trait always stayed with me. Seniors are of are our past and present. I have always had the gift for talking and taking care of those who need someone, particularly the older people of our society. When my grandmother was in nursing home. I got a position as a nurses aid so I could be close to her. And thus my love grew even more, if that was possible to take care of people. The thing I love most about being a caregiver is making someone's day and seeing them smile. My personal achievement that I am most proud of is the look on someone's face when I just sit and talk to them about their past.
