I became a habilitation assistant because I needed a job. At first, I didn't think I could handle it. But I lasted almost seven years. I now need a change of pace from the group home setting of six clients and three staff - That's a lot of people in a small space! I'm ready now for one to one care. I became very attached to the clients in the group home. One of the women loved looking good before going out. During the six years I worked with her, I got pretty good at styling her hair, applying her makeup, and coordinating her outfits. She does not speak so it took time and patience for me to earn her trust and understand her cues. I am so proud of her progress using communication devices and touch to indicate her needs and desires. I like to help people do what they can't but I also like celebrating with them their achievements in caring for themselves. My father was able to stay at home instead of in a nursing home until he passed away, due in part to loving caregivers and hospice workers. If I can help people stay in a comfortable home environment as long as they can, then I consider myself privileged and blessed to provide that service.
