About Sharon

I am a caregiver because, after working in the healthcare field for 20 years and taking care of my own mother for five years, I understand what families and individuals need. I have knowledge of the medical, social, and community resources that a family or individual needs to make the right choices for their needs. I have also provided direct care for elders who have physical and memory deficits that put them at risk. I enjoy being a care giver because I know that I have the knowledge, skills and ability to provide exceptional care and support for both my clients and their families. I am proud of my efforts on behalf of my clients and their families. I have always taken what I do as a privilege and a responsibility to challenge myself to go the extra mile in all that I do. A major achievement in my life was my ability to complete 2 college degrees on academic scholarships. I am a senior myself. I am in excellent health and enjoy a wide variety of interests and activities. Before I retired the first time, I held a variety of management positions as well as direct care positions. I choose to do caregiving as I have several other second career options. I enjoy reading, crafts, walking, art, movies, plays, live music, cooking, sports (especially college basketball). I have 2 cats although I enjoy all animals . I enjoy gardening, drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway and other scenic areas. I enjoy my family and spend time with my sister who lives close by. I

I became a senior caregiver almost two years ago, prior to that I worked in disability for five years. Many of my friends say that I have a lot of compassion and would have made a great mother. My strengths are the ability to listen, be quiet, enter the persons world I am responsible for. I feel strong about acknowledging people's dignity especially as we age and become dependent. Over the past two years I have worked with approximately two dozen different seniors, all with different needs, and circumstances. What do I like about being a caregiver? Knowing that I am truly adding value to someone's life is one of the most rewarding experiences I can have and I feel very blessed and grateful for each of them. A personal achievement that I am very proud of is that I founded and community magazine while living in Australia that gives a good wholesome reflection of the lives and communities in a rural area. I sold the magazine to an Australian before I returned to the states and the magazine is still going strong! I am a Christian but acknowledge all religions. I am a very open hearted person, and would love to meet with any family who thinks I might be the right person to assist their loved one.
