I am a retired school teacher with 22 years experience and Class A certifications in all subjects(grades 4 to 8); with 20 plus years teaching science and health. In addition, I have a degree in Radiology Technology with over 20 years of experience in hospitals, managed a medical office and responsible for patient care. I am seeking a position as a caregiver, companion/assistant. I would also be available as a caretaker for a private property. My personal experiences in care giving include: 3 years caring for my mother until her death, 2 years caring for a friend until her death, and 9 months care giving for a friend until her death. My qualifications include: well-educated, medical experience over 20 plus years (classes taken for CNA), good listener, very organized and good at organization, attention to details, knowledge of nutrition and health issues. I have excellent references, sent upon request. I am available for part-time work of approximately 20 hours per week: however I am not able to work week-ends because I have to care for my elderly father. In the case of a job as a property caretaker I would be more available due to this type of postion. Due to my educational and medical experiences, I work very well with others and patient. I consider myself a facilitator of healing and learning, which includes being a caregiver. Helping people to achieve their highest level of functioning is what healing is all about which usually includes the process of clients learning new skills. Having been a nurse for 39 years, I have worked at one time or another in almost every aspect of nursing and health care, including many different settings in hospitals, Long Term Care and in the community in group homes, general home health care and community mental health as well as Utilization Review and Education and training.
What I have most enjoyed is being able to integrate some of the more holistic aspects of healing and health care into my everyday positions (eg. Nutrition, Stress Management & Relaxation, CranioSacral Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, Color & Sound therapy, etc.). One of the most successful cases I have worked on was a little 8 y.o. boy who had suffered a severe anoxic brain injury after being in a diabetic coma. When I met him, he was confined to a wheelchair, barely able to move more than a finger on his one hand, was fed through a G-tube, not able to walk or talk and required total care. It required intense dedication from his family, assisted in their home by nursing, PT, OT, Speech and many volunteers, but by the end of my time with him 2 years later through an integrated program utilizing many modalities, he was able to walk with a brace, his speech was much improved, he had started toileting himself and was able to eat by mouth again, GT removed. His vision was still not optimal, but had improved significantly and he was able to start attending school again. That was real healing which I was very proud to be a part of!! I can only hope to have opportunities like that again. I am a caregiver because, after working in the healthcare field for 20 years and taking care of my own mother for five years, I understand what families and individuals need. I have knowledge of the medical, social, and community resources that a family or individual needs to make the right choices for their needs. I have also provided direct care for elders who have physical and memory deficits that put them at risk.
I enjoy being a care giver because I know that I have the knowledge, skills and ability to provide exceptional care and support for both my clients and their families.
I am proud of my efforts on behalf of my clients and their families. I have always taken what I do as a privilege and a responsibility to challenge myself to go the extra mile in all that I do. A major achievement in my life was my ability to complete 2 college degrees on academic scholarships.
I am a senior myself. I am in excellent health and enjoy a wide variety of interests and activities. Before I retired the first time, I held a variety of management positions as well as direct care positions. I choose to do caregiving as I have several other second career options. I enjoy reading, crafts, walking, art, movies, plays, live music, cooking, sports (especially college basketball). I have 2 cats although I enjoy all animals . I enjoy gardening, drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway and other scenic areas. I enjoy my family and spend time with my sister who lives close by. I
