What makes me a great caregiver is that I am a; hard worker, honest/open, passionate, punctual, reliable, kind/caring, compassionate, good listener/communicator, and organized. I want to be a caregiver because I have a passion for helping others, and through my time in this position I have come to love caring for the elderly. What I enjoy most about being a caregiver is forming relationships, and shared experiences of joy and sorrow.

My name is Ramona and I have lived in the LC valley for 24 years. I have a 23 year old daughter. I became a caregiver because I love helping families and the elderly and making their life easier. I like being a caregiver because it gives me a self gratification and it is something I enjoy. A personal achievement I am proud of is being able to treat disease processes adequately and give the care needed properly.

I am a great caregiver because I understand that one of the most important parts included in the care provided to an individual is companionship. Companionship is such an important part in care because a real human connection helps with mental and emotional well being. Taking care of physical well being is incredibly important but is only half the job. I learned this while caring for my grandmother near the end of her life. My experience started with her and moved on to caring for a wonderful woman named Majorie until she had to go into assisted living. After that I got a job working at a day program for adults with developmental disabilities. Each person I have cared for has taught me so much about doing my job better. They have taught me about caring for the whole person, not just their physical needs but their mental and emotional needs as well. The point of being a caregiver is to do what is necessary to make a persons life better.

I love helping people. My relatively short experience with Benco in Corvallis prepared me with extensive training and certifications providing direct support for intellectually and developmentally handicapped clients. I served in a facility where clients were not ambulatory, and unable to feed or bathe themselves. We were dedicated to providing the best care and daily experiences for our clients. It is very fulfilling to know that in spite of any physical or intellectual limitations, our clients enjoyed outdoor adventures, daily walks around the neighborhood, music and book reading time, excellent personal hygiene, and frequent interaction with staff who truly cared about them.

I believe this is where I belong, my calling so to speak! I have recently focused on Hospice cases and it has made a huge difference in my life. Returning to school at my age was terrifying to say the least. I think this time, I wanted to learn and was ready. After High School, further education was not high on my list.
