As I was growing up, I have always found myself with the motivation, and desire to help people. I was young when I realized I could capitalize on my motivation to help make a difference, and turn it into a profession. My desire to pursue the field of Social Work has meaning. I want a profession where I am able to help, and to advocate for those who are pushed aside, those who are marginalized, the minorities, the oppressed, the under served populations. Social justice is extremely important to me. I want to be able to provide access and opportunity to vulnerable populations because they deserve equal economic, political, and social rights. People are not to be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, socio-economic class, gender, sexuality, disability, or any other relatable characteristic. I want to help people function as best they can in the environment that they are in. I find it rewarding to help someone realize their potential to make successful changes with goals they have set for themselves. Here is a quote that gives me motive, "Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person"(Spear, N.D ). This quote gives me motive because I understand how hard change can be, and in choosing social work as my profession I am aware that there will be times that are difficult, but I have to remind myself that what I do for my clients will impact their lives, and after all of the difficulties, helping them want to help themselves will most definitely be worthwhile and rewarding. I hope to become a compassionate and empathetic social worker who is effective in making a difference, and who can set a precedence for passing these important qualities forward. I want to be part of the contribution of making change in the world.
