"The quality of a society, I mean of a civilization, is also judged by how it treats elderly people and by the place it gives them in community life" - Benedict XVI Years later, Pope Francis addressed the issue again of the elderly in our society by saying that they are, "...a wealth not to be ignored." And indeed they are a wealth I have done my best not to ignore. I have spent a good deal of my life around and taking care of the elderly, from my grandparents, to the residents of Holy Family Manor, to those I meet in my daily routines. From a simple smile, to a kind disposition when helping them with everyday activities, it is important that we make our elders -feel- important. I remember when my grandfather first began showing signs of dementia, how there were those who backed away from him. I did my best to be there for him, lovingly and caringly. From listening to stories about how to cut stained glass, to singing "On Top of Old Smokey" with him for the hundredth time, all happily with a smile on my lips. Our elderly are a treasure, one that deserves companionship, kindness, and comfort.
