I was a full time critical care registered nurse for 11 years. After retiring from nursing in November 2014 I took on the task of caring for my mother for approximately the last four months of her life. During the four months time, I was at my mothers bedside or in her residence 24 hours a day. I was the only link that she had with any dignity, because all of the activities of daily living she could not perform. I became her surrogate, and also her companion for the last months prior to her passing. This was quite frankly the most rewarding part of my care giving career that I have ever experienced. Being part of an individual's final days on earth and being able to take care of their every need, to include a companion toward the end, is very needed commodity and one I want to pass on to others. I am also an Army veteran, having served during the Gulf war of 1990 as a 1st Lieutenan. My reserve status ended in 2015..

Compassion in understanding of what the person is going through. Attentiveness it is important to me when providing home care that I am attentive to the needs and changes that are taking place. By being attentive, I will notice when there are emotional or physical changes in the person I am caring for. Dependability is imperative that I be dependable and show up to provide the care that the person needs and is counting on.
