I was a Librarian back in the Philippines but when I came to the US in 2006, my friend encouraged me to try working with the elderly as a caregiver. Since then, I have been working as a caregiver and I developed the love and passion in taking care of the elderly. I had experienced.taking care.of elderly with different health issues such as Alzheimers, Dementia, diabetis, heart diseases (ie. CHF), Lung or respiratory disease, Stroke, non-ambulatory, bed bound elderly, etc. I assist them with their activities of daily living, prepare meals, laundry, do light housekeeping, medication reminder, assist with their errands and there were some elderly who asked me to organize their bills, do grocery and run other errands for them. I was not only a caregiver.but also a personal assistant. I am proud of being a caregiver because I know I make a difference in the lives of the elderly and I become part of the last journey of their lives.
My nationality is Filipino, married, with 4 grown up children and 12 grandchildren who live in the Philippines.
Hi My name is Emica Dumesle-Henry. When I first started home care, I was taking care of my mom. I am caring by nature. I know how important it is to find good help to take care of loves ones. I have been in home health care for well over 6 year. My mom had a lot of health issues I had to deal with. She was blind, she had renal failure, she has asthma, she high blood pressure, and diabetes, she was required to have oxygen. I took good care of my mom until she died this year because her health got the best of her.
I use to go to every doctors appointments with. Back in 2011 at one particular appointment the case workers ask did I have any one coming out to help her, ie home care provider, I said no I do every thing. She then gave me a card and told me I can get paid for the things I was already doing, the rest is history. During the time I did home care for my mom, I received a lot of training and certificate form DHS DORS, Bed making, problem solving, working with depress clients, and many more related certificates.
What I enjoy the most by doing home health care is seeing the joy you bring to people who really needs your help. My most proud accomplishment was when I use to hear my mom tell everyone she knew how I take good care of her. That use to make me feel like I am doing something right. Before I became a caregiver, I was a caregiver student first. The question is why did I choose to study caregiving? It seems that my interest, my love for this job comes naturally in me. I love to taking care of other people to make other people comfortable, happy and satisfied so I find joy in doing so.
Being a caregiver is my way of earning a living. Aside from the fact of earning my living, I also earn friendship & family like relationship. Almost all of my client & their families became close to me. They treated me like family & so did I. Even when my client is gone or passed away but their family are still in contact & whenever they needed my assistance I'm always there to help in any ways I can.
My personal achievement is that i am a good husband and a proud father of my daughter who works as an RN at a well known hospital.
I am a very caring person with good interpersonal relationship. As a filipino it is in our culture to take care of our elderly. So being a caregiver is not really a job to me because this is what we do and love to do it. I've had years of experiences with different clients and different cases such as dementia-alzheimers disease, parkinson disease, prostate cancer, stroke, bed-ridden, pressure sore, hospice care, diabetes and others. I am a very handy person I have knowledge of automotive mechanic, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and an Uber rideshare chauffeur driver and other household maintenance.
