What attracted me to be a caregiver is the need for more community outreach. To be able to help residents in my community who fall under our "underserved" population to educate and help them better understand the help that they are entitled to!!

I took care of my mom who had uterine cancer for 3 years. After she passed my dad got sick Had to have a pacemaker and had multiple aneurysms. And then he got cancer. I also cared for my mentally and physically handicapped sister who developed non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. All over a span of 10 years. I've cared for one gentleman over the past year and a half and I'm hoping to pursue a nursing career in the spring

I became a caregiver because my grandfather had Alzheimer's before he passed away and I helped take care of him. I know how important it is to the family to have their families taken care of. I think my favorite part of being a caregiver is seeing my individuals accomplish something and them smiling.

One thing I have learned about myself throughout my nursing career is how much I enjoy the elderly population. I have experience in large nursing homes, small home to individual care. The intimacy of individual care has me hooked! Really getting to know a person, what they really enjoy, that's what it is all about. I was lucky enough to have had my grandparents in my life till a couple years ago. I took care of them at the end, as tough as it was, they had a beautiful end of life. To me, that is the most important thing. To allow and encourage them to do what makes them happy while offering the support they need. That could be something simple like having that favorite meal, going for a ride to a favorite place, or just having someone to talk to. It is my responsibility to ensure they are able to enjoy life, and I am committed to doing all I can to make them smile each day.
