I have been, and still am, a personal caregiver for my spouse who has Alzheimer's dementia. The experience gained by being there 24/7 is something that cannot be taught in school. Faith, patience, strength, and a great sense of humor will always carry me through any day. It is a personal reward that I gain by assisting others, something that is hard to measure by any means other than what you feel inside. Being the individual that gives the family member the ability to remove themselves for a short time is something of great value, this I know from personal experience. I am 61 years old and have always loved to take care of others and I feel it necessary in life to make a difference in the lives of others. I do not have a medical background, but my personal experience has been my on-the-job training and I want to use what I have learned to assist someone else. What I do have is the ability to cook, clean, assist with or run errands, or maybe just sit and keep someone else company. My husband and I worked jointly for many years, but his medical issues no longer allow this to continue. I do need to work and we have a son and daughter-in-law living next door that can fill in for me to take local employment. I want to make a difference in someone else's life, be the reason someone smiles and hopefully has a better day.
