I became a caregiver when my neighbors house burned down. He was 82 years old and lost. He was like a grandfather to my kids and a father to me. I found it was rewarding to help him because he didn't have anyone to help. I started taking him to doctors appointments helping him with insurance grocery shopping and it made me feel good that he looked forward to seeing me every day. My personal achievement was having his house rebuilt handicap accessible and working with the builder to get wider doors and hallways also install ramps and a walk in bathtub. I also watched over the insurance for him to keep him on his budget. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and some dementia as well. He has now passed a month ago. I feel lost because I enjoyed helping him and I felt so important. I have always worked in sales and I have done very well but the thought of going back to sales does not seem enjoyable. I have 2 sons one is 22 and in college the other is 17 and goes to school and works. My husband works for Delta and we have lived in Newnan for 18 years. I have never been a caregiver only to my children until this last few years and it just seems like it is my calling.

I became a caregiver because I was responsible for taking care of my grandmother and I felt so fulfilled, I just want to treat people the way I would want my loved ones to be treated. The thing I like the most about being a caregiver is the rewarding felling i get when I can make someones day better because of something that I said or did. The personal achievement I feel most proud of is having raised my four kids to be the beautiful people that they are today. I have been a CNA for 17yrs and still find it as fulfilling as I did back in 1997, I had even gone back to school and became a Corrections Officer and found that my heart was just not in it so I made the decision to go back to doing what I love to do.
