My parents are recent residents of Nashville due to their decline in health and need to be closer to me. Dad has dementia which shows with short term much more than long term memory. He is a popular guy to some and not so much to others. The caregiver that does well with him Has a sense of humor, is not overly sensitive (he is too direct for some) and is not condescending in their tone. He needs to move. He needs to walk a little. He would love trips to McKays Books. Or to the local museums - art or country, doesn’t matter. Mom is tired. She needs relief. She needs a break. She needs a meal cooked for them a few times a week. She needs the floors swept or vacuumed and the counters wiped. She cleans her own bathroom but having someone doing showers would be safer for them. And she’d love to talk to someone who can listen and empathize. They both need guidance on how to take advantage of all their technology. The tv stays on the same channel unless I show them how to get YouTube videos, etc. maybe I exaggerate but nearly. They are very intelligent people, but they are overwhelmed. And they love new things. They want to be happy. They just need some encouragement. And direction. They are not morning people. Any time after 10:30 would be fine. We are flexible. I do the grocery shopping as well as my mom does. Mom has a bland palette for food so sometimes is picky. But not fancy. I would like to see them eat more regularly and healthily. Some frozen food is ok but simple fresh meals would be my dream for them. Lastly, a male caregiver might be better for my dad. It’s not necessary. He’s just an older guy with a big ego. A strong woman can handle him. I should know. My favorite caregivers for him have been middle age women, but I’m open to any sex, race, age, preference ... none of us cares about that. We just want him to smile more and my mom to get some me time for herself.
