I enjoy being a caregiver because I don't get to see my nanny often due to her living in another state. I love to be able to help people when they need the extra hand. I love hearing about their life adventures. I went to school to be a medical assistant but after a few years went into home health so that I could help the elderly and be their so they don't feel alone. I am their to give a hand with what they need and a ear to listen just when they need to talk.

I was a hospital corpsman in the Navy and became a social worker after graduating college. I had the opportunity to advance to position of administrator of nursing homes and the executive director of assisted living facilities. As a nursing home administrator, I also became a nurse aide in order to help my nursing staff when they needed help. After retirement, I have worked as a Supported Living Counselor with developmentally disabled adults and as a home health aide with seniors. I also cared for my 85 y/o aunt full time until she died. Living on my Social Security income, I work for personal satisfaction and for the additional income. I have had several personal achievements for which I am proud, but the greatest have been those recognized by my clients' families who have commended me on the quality of my care and who have thanked me for allowing their family members to effectively delay institutionalization.

I became interested in caregiving when I traveled to MD Anderson Cancer Center to be with my mother. It was upon my return that I had decided this was my true calling.
