I believe what makes me a great caregiver is I generally care about the ones I take care of. Some companies tell you that part of your job is not to get close to your clients or patients, that you can't have a relationship with the ones you take care of on a daily basis. I will always go above and beyond for the ones under my care. I always feel and treat them as if they are one of my family members as well. I wouldn't do anything for them that I wouldn't do for my own mom , grandma, aunt, uncle, dad, grandfather. Not only am I there for the client/patient but I'm also there for the families as well. Questions, concerns, suggestions, keeping them up to date on conditions. Communication is big with me on keeping everyone on the same page so that the best care can be given at all times. I became a caregiver because my ex husband was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. He called me from the hospital asking for my advise and help. I left California to go back to New York to help him threw his treatments and all of his struggles. His fight has been long and hard and he has not given up yet on life. Seeing other family members go in and out of nursing homes being neglected , alone, and losing their will to live has been a struggle and I've taken caregiver positions with all of my terminally ill relatives and a few friends. I want others to feel that their loved ones are safe and taken care of when they are unable to be there with them. That's the main reason why I do what I do. The fulfillment I get when I know I've made a difference for someone else. Whether it's for the patient that is passing or the family members that need that reassurance their loved one is being properly taken care of. I enjoy everything there is to being a care giver.

I have enjoyed working with the elderly since a young age, as I grew up on a farm with my grandmother. In my late teens, my grandmother developed dementia, and my family and I were fortunate to find wonderful caregivers to provide in-home support. In large part to this experience, I studied Healthcare Inequalities focusing on the stigma of old age. Subsequently, I conducted an ethnographic study of the Gray Panthers, an old-age activist group. I continued this interest into graduate school, where I conducted life history interviews with feminist activists in London to explore the intersection of old age and gender in the London feminist movement.
My compassion, empathy , patience, and dependability helps with being a great caregiver. After learning to provide care for my sibling with Autism and Cerebral Palsy I've been attracted to being able to be a caregiver. The most rewarding part of being a caregiver is providing compassionate care for each client. My proudest achievement is learning new knowledge from each clients circumstances.
I am a very nurturing and kind person. I am very sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of those around me, very empathetic, gentle, good sense of humor. Treating people with respect is very important to me and I know it is to you as well. Most recently, for over a year, I worked with 2 female clients. One client is 98 with visual and hearing impairments, diabetes and mild dimentia. I was responsible for taking daily glucose readings, keeping records of her medical data/appointments/medication dispensing. I cooked her a hearty breakfast and we ate together. I introduced her to a game called "WordCross" and she loved to play every day with me. It was great for her mind and was a good social experience as well. Another client had early stage Alzheimers, but was highly functional. I provided companionship, meal preparation for her and her husband, fixed her hair, walked outside with her, did their grocery shopping, and occasionally we enjoyed shopping/lunch trips together. I have additional experience working with clients that have terminal cancer. I not only met their specific physical needs, but created an environment for them which brought them comfort and peace during the most difficult time of their lives. What made me most aware of the needs of seniors was when my own grandmother was near the end of her life. I helped her daily with dressing, grooming, feeding, and eventually accompanied her through her last days in hospice. I understand how important it is for families to feel confident that their loved one is being treated with gentleness and respect. I want to help seniors to have the best quality of life possible. I look forward to visiting with you to see how I could help meet the needs of your loved one, Amy
