The reason why I became a caregiver is because 10 years ago my mother-in-law got really sick and someone needed to take care of her. Subpar communication will do nothing beneficial for the relationship, and in fact, could damage it. Furthermore, as it's likely there's more than one caregiver in the individual's life, and because of all the moving parts, communication is key to get information to all the relevant parties. Whether it's relaying health information or just remaining congenial, communication between caregivers is important, second only to communicating with the individual.

I took care of my mother when she was ill. It was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have ever done! By nature my mom was a little ornery, being ill didn't help. I didn't let that bother me. I loved hearing stories from her past and working on sewing projects and gardening with her. Like her, I appreciate the simple joys in life.
