ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting nerve cells and voluntary muscle function. Symptoms of this progressive disease usually appear between the ages of 40 and 70 and include muscle stiffness and weakness, spontaneous contractions, and cramping eventually leading to complete paralysis. Caregivers are critical partners, promoting communication, hygiene, and mobility. They can assist with nonverbal exchange, grooming, and transportation needs, including use of wheelchairs and canes.
