Lindsey schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. When I met Lindsey she had been living in residential treatment for more than five years with the prognosis that she would never be well enough to live on her own. Upon Lindsey's leaving the residential treatment facility, I went to work for her. My role has always been more one of a personal assistant than of a caregiver, although I have assumed a number of caregiving responsibilities, such as monitoring medications, watching her diet as well as shopping and preparing meals, light housework and being aware of and tracking her moods. My personal assistant duties include, but are not limited to, organizing files and bills, running errands, scheduling appointments and keeping her calendar.

Carrie Kearns

Carrie was my first caregiving assignment who was not a family member. She is a C-3 quadriplegic. Carrie instructed me in all of her care, from using the Hoyer lift to emptying her colostomy bag. It was baptism by fire. I cared for Carry pretty much full time for about the first year and a half that I was with her. After that, I worked for her on a fill-in basis, part time. I have been intimately involved in practically level of Carries care, from wound care and flu care to shopping trips and taking her cat to the vet. Today I consider Carrie a good friend and she is a regular holiday guest in my home.

Cared for the physical, mental and emotional needs of a declining female Alzheimer's Patient into the late stages of the disease. I began this position full time the first year and continued in it part time for the subsequent two years. One of my responsibilities was playing 500 Rummy with the client -- for hours. That's how we kept her mind active. I continued coaching her through card games pretty much throughout the course of the Alzheimer's. Position also required, during the summer, for me to travel to Northern Arizona and stay over sometimes several nights at a time.

Gary is a traumatic brain injury survivor. When I met he was having severe and frequent seizures. Additionally, he was despondent and experiencing profound depression. My responsibilities included monitoring his seizures and keeping him safe in the event of a seizure, as well as setting up his medication on a monthly basis. I also acted as a companion and a sounding board. My experience and skills as a life coach proved invaluable in helping him come out of his despondency and work through his depression. I introduced him to various art and arts and crafts activities, which he slowly warmed to and today he thoroughly enjoys.

At Jerry's I cared for Ron, Jerry's middle aged brother in law, who is developmentally disabled, autistic and sight impaired. I monitored his seizures and kept him safe in the event of a seizure, administered medications, prepared and fed him breakfast and lunch, toileted him and entertained him with conversation, music and television. I also completed light household chores, such as dishes, laundry, dusting and sweeping the floors.
