I became a Nursing Assistant so that I could take care of my family when they got sick. I learned about Nursing Assistants watch my older cousin who taught me about caring for others when her daughter got sick with cancer. I was a senior in high school when I started thinking about what I would do if my family got sick and needed care. After 2 months of watching my closest aunt begin her fight with cancer I started searching for schools and nursing homes that would train me to become a great nursing assistant. I applied to several nursing homes for kitchen and laundry positions, but instead one nursing home interviewed me and stated, 'I am sorry I can not offer you a kitchen position because I don't see you succeeding in that position. I want to you to attend our CNA class that will train you for better positions in the future.' The greatest accomplishment that I can say that I have done is keep the goal that I started this for, be able to take care my family when they became sick. Because now I can help my mother with my grandmother. I teach my mother what needs to be done to keep my grandmother stable. After all these years for being a CNA I can say that the best part of the job is being able to learn from the all the different wisdom that the people I take care of offer the caregivers in their own way. Best quote I've heard and learned from a patient that always gave me a hard time is 'I can't teach those that don't want to be taught, but those that do I will be a hard patient for them in different situations so that they will learn that no one is the same everyday. So learn what you can as everyday approaches you.'
