I became a caregiver to my Grandmother when she moved into my parents home and they needed someone to care for her when they were gone. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and couldn't remember what came next in her day. She could however remember many stories of her childhood and she enjoyed sharing those memories. I was in charge of getting her shower, her meals, her medications, and for her fun! It was a rewarding time. After much research on Alzheimer's, I was able to relate to her well and realized that the main thing I could do for her was to make her present time enjoyable even if she didn't reme mber it an hour later. It was a blessing to get to spend those years with her before she needed to go to a higher level of care. We chose a great facility for her and our church children's ministry began to lead holiday parties at the facility for all the residents. We served there for another 3 years and the children loved helping the residents and visiting with them in their rooms. After 23 years, I retired from ministry and am hoping to help another family during challenging times by caring for their loved ones. ... more
