I am 63 years old and semi-retired. I was raised as the only girl in a family of boys and my parents were older when I was born so my life was surrounded by older folks. I have always been drawn to what older generations have to offer in the ways of life experience. I have learned from them and I am compassionate about their care and feel they deserved respect and patience among so many other things. One of the things I have done in my life as an artist is start a theatre company in LA called The Ivy Theatre. This company was named after a women by the name of Ivy Bottini who had been an activist in the womens movement for many years as well as the Gay and Lesbian Movement. I wanted to honor her by this theatre company and I did by producing plays that were not always done. My most treasured experience was producing a show about women in the military and on the first row was a woman in her late 80's who came to me with tears in her eyes saying it was the first time she had ever seen her life experience on the stage. I love elders and am passionate about their later years being lived with as much comfort and pleasure as possible. From 2010 to 2015 I was a caregiver for my mother who was in her 90's. I moved back to my home in Austin and commuted every week for 3 hours to get to her home where I stayed five days out of every week to not only help with her care but provide all mothers needs from financial to emotional support. My brothers did not help my mother it was left to me. I learned so much while caring for her one of the things I learned was that I want to help other seniors live the last years of their life in as much comfort as possible. There is so much depression in the senior community in fact my Masters Thesis was on this topic and on how important peer counsling is for our seniors. I could go on and on about my experiences and my passion when it comes to our elders but I will save it for the interview.
