For 15 years I was a volunteer Project Home Care Provider for the State of MD for adults w/disabilities who lived in my home. I received a monthly stipend for each resident and attended all required trainings; CPR, First Aid, Fire Safety, Medications and more. Sometimes 1, 2, and occasionally 3 residents lived with me at the same time. When I started in the early 90's I was the first and only Care Provider who'd accept a person out of the 3 counties in Southern Maryland who had HIV. This person lived with me for 4 yrs but sadly passed. Before moving in, Social Service sent a nurse to discuss the ways one contracts the disease and I never did; it is difficult to acquire even sharing the same bathroom and kitchen as we did. Sadly HIV/Aides is still misunderstood. I received an award from the Governor of Maryland for helping this individual but more importantly I was able to help someone who desperately needed it. It was a win win situation for that special person to be able to live in a nice home. And I'm glad I could be a part of helping to improve their quality of life. I remember their beautiful soul and treause the time we spent together. I also assisted a quadriplegic man (private pay) with personal and wound care for 15 years. I've worked private pay for other indiduals too. (the elderly and those with disabilities). My brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was young. He's lived with me several times and now lives in an attached in-law apt and I continue to assist him. I worked for the Arc of Southern Maryland (Association of Retarded Citizens) for 4 years. (I had a different married name at that time.. I took care of my mother who had cancer (multiple myeloma). It was an honor to help her through this devastating disease and I'm grateful I could be with her when she passed. And I was blessed to be a stay at home mom; my grown daughter lives in Florida.
