Assist my ALS patient in his daily living activities: Food preparation just to make sure my patient is displaying proper nutrition. I fed him by mouth but later on because most of the time he aspirates or had a problem of swallowing his doctor recommended to put a G - tube. Because of trouble breathing he was advised to implant a Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS) too . So all liquids, meds and foods goes thru the G - Tube. I need to suction him more often because he is drooling a lot. I do bathing and grooming, medication administration, transferring, toileting... Take my patient around to doctor's appointment and to other social gathering and sports activities using his customized van. I also monitor patients health condition. In case there is any changes or needs attention make sure it will be reported to supervising nurse. My client is very dependent on me because of the ALS made his system declined. He can't talk and can't move his hands and can barely move his legs helping me a little during transfers. We only communicate thru his Tobii I12 series, Eye tracking device.

I worked with my patient a grandma, 81 years of age with diabetes and COPD. I took care of her for more than 3 years living in her own house. She was a nice grandma. I helped her in her daily activities like in the morning before getting up or transfer I need to exercise her follows toileting, shower and grooming. I do meal preparation, asses medical needs and monitor medications. Before she eats make sure I have to check her blood pressure and blood sugar. She weighs 230 pounds, so during transfer she needs full assist and am always prepared to avoid her from falling. I do groceries if needed and pick up her prescription to the Pharmacy. I do monitor on her daily performance/moves, health conditions. In case if there is any changes I need to speak to her nurse/doctor for them to check/asses. I drove her to doctor appointments and going to family visits and friends. In the afternoon I see to it she comfortable sitting in her recliner chatting with her and sometimes she read her books. She used nebulizer 3 times a day. On the night time before going to sleep I need to put her CPAP machine for her sleep apnea.

I worked here as a caregiver with my boss as my partner taking care of 5 patients with different diagnosis. ( diabetis, COPD, dementia, cancer , Alzheimer). My boss and I worked here as a teamwork. Morning is the most critical time. He will help me in toileting, bathing the patients before preparing the breakfast. Making sure they all clean and groom.ed. While in the process of food preparation I will check and prepare their morning medication. This is a routine everytime they have their meal to make sure they will take their medications on time as prescribed by their doctors. I used to be their companion like when they need to talk to someone I was there anytime for them to give them comfort and smiles and entertain then when seems they feel down and upset or depress. By just sitting with them and listening is already a big factor to feel for them that they are loved. I treat them as my family to feel for them that I care. I played with them bingo and card games. I helped too in doing some paperworks like proper documentations needed for each patient and for the Homecare in preparation for the inspection.. I bring also patients to their doctors appointment and monitoring is always there. When given time I will do housekeeping to maintain clean and healthy environment..

This is a Homecare licensed for 5 beds. This is my first job wherein I got my very first experience in caregiving jobs here. This was the time also where I got all my trainings (CPR/ First Aid) and received my Caregiver's certificate. Anyway, for me landing in this kind of job is career. I worked here as a live in caregiver. We were 3 caregivers working for five (5) patients with different cases. We always had a rotation on duties and responsibilities given to us. We had a daily living activities guide to perform....Meal preparation, toileting, bathing and grooming. With regards on transfers some patients need to use Hoyer lift and others they don't. In the morning I gave them exercises and some needs to put them outside to get some fresh air and enjoy the weather. I spent time sometimes talking and playing games with them. Checked and monitor blood pressures and blood sugars if needed in the care plan. I did housekeeping to maintain a clean living environment.

I like helping elderly. Its a fun job, challenging but rewarding. I have working in this field for many years and I am proud that so many lives had been changed, and lifted up through me. A life of 90 years old man who could not take care himself and the family were so busy, and he was able to survive for seven years. I have been caregiver and CNA for more than ten years. I have worked in nursing homes, hospital and private duty in California, then I moved to Colorado for better future, Unfortunately my family won't move there because of cold weather. So at this time I'm back to California to be together with my family and looking for a job here.
