I am a high school graduate, self taught in this field of work, I found there are never to many questions and the answers are out there, just have to dig sometimes, to find them, I wont take "no" for an answer. In my experience working with the disabled population the most important thing is to listen to them, they have ideas and voices and aren't always allowed to put in their feed back on any situation. I also am very patient and willing to assist to help them learn new things, nothing more rewarding than to see a disabled person learn to do something new, its very rewarding to me. I have worked with all aspects of the disabled, from autism, developmentally delayed, mental illness, blind & deaf, & medically challenged, I don't want to make it sound easy, its not, it can be tedious, trying and take a long time to accomplish the smallest task, but in the end the smile from their accomplishment is amazing. I also have found disabled are like everyone else, they don't like being cooped up in their homes, I try to find activities for them, at little or no cost, (like a picnic lunch to a local little league game, or even walking around a few blocks picking up recycling items for spending money for them), being creative really helps. But most importantly work with them, not against them.
Caregivers that work non-full-time jobs or irregular shifts can negotiate extra compensation in addition to their standard hourly wage.
