I was in the corporate world and after several lay-offs I chose to do something different. I wanted to give back and take care of people, not just the bottom line, sales quotas and the corporate machine. I had been a Marketing Manager and wanted to feel rewarded at the end of the day, not just a person who received a paycheck. I like being a caregiver because I have a soft spot for the elderly and love to talk to them. I believe they need to be treated with dignity and respect. I am proud of the excellent care I give my clients. The last lady that I worked with for 5 years recently passed away. I was with her when she passed. I miss her greatly, but I know she passed at home, in her bed in a loving environment. I am proud of my achievement with this client because even though there was a language barrier, she and I communicated very well. I was more than a caregiver to her. We became friends; which I find essential with those that we take care of. I always maintained my professional demeanor but I know she appreciated that she could trust me no matter what situation arose. I heard the same stories a million times but each time acted like she was telling me it for the first time. I learned so much from her about history and her native Sicily. Her family were wonderful people and told me I was one of them. What greater honor can any of us ask of ourselves?
