Growing up, my brother was severely autistic and nonverbal with clubbed feet. My mother didn't provide the care he needed, so at the age of 10, I began caring for him. This would include diaper changes, sitting with him and his speech therapist, feeding him, taking him out for sun and air, handling moodswings, administering medications, and being able to physically support someone twice my size. In 2015, his kidneys failed, we found out when he was breathing badly so we took him to the doctor. When they couldn't find anything immediately wrong with him and he, being nonverbal, couldn't communicate what was going on, they referred him to Sunrise hospital for a pneumonia screening which I demanded he be taken to, as our mother didn't want to. When i found out his kidneys had failed, I stayed nights in the hospital with him and was forced to drop out of highschool to care for him, because I knew he wouldn't be properly cared for otherwise. At this point, his care level went up and now included a special diet, 3 dialysis trips weekly, and maintaining new medications and his dialysis port. In 2016 we were removed from the home and I maintained his care even in the supervision of child protective services. I persisted with this care through his transplant and his aftercare. My role only ended when I aged out of the household and he was taken back into state custody from my parents.
