My interest in eldercare was sparked not long after I graduated from Pomona College. I returned to graduate school at UCLA in 1973 for a Master's in Public Health after seeing first-hand I the deplorable conditions of Medi-Cal (Medicaid) patients in nursing homes as part of my job for the County of Los Angeles. I subsequently became interested in holistic health care, and have been a licensed acupuncturist since 1988 building a successful practice. When my mother needed care (she lived in the Netherlands), starting in 2008, I arranged for all of her care during my twice a year visits, 6 weeks to 3 months at a time. She was able to live independently, despite early signs of Alzheimer's, until she passed away in December of 2013 at age 90. Because I had difficulty maintaining my acupuncture practice due to long absences, I began to accept temporary caregiving assignments through an agency, with occasional privately referred cases. I enrolled in the CNA/HHA program at West Los Angeles College, passing and obtaining my licenses in 2015. In 2017 I completed a new certificate program with "Senior Care Technician" designation at Los Angeles Trade Tech. Since that time I have completed numerous online health care courses, with particular focus on seniors with Alzheimer's and dementia. My career goal is to become a coach/consultant for family caregivers of their elders, especially those with Alzheimer's dementia. I am completing courses for that purpose at this time, while continuing to accept care assignments. My passion is to support family members who are responsible for care of their loved ones and to mitigate the devastating effects of dementia.
Caregivers that work non-full-time jobs or irregular shifts can negotiate extra compensation in addition to their standard hourly wage.
