Caregiving has been part of my family tradition. Iam a very patient person that helps me to be a great caregiver. Working with elderly, we need to be patient, since life has slowed down for them , we need to go on their pace not ours. What attracted me to be a caregiver is that , back home its a joy for us to take care of our elderly family members. For 18yrs i worked for The Salvation Army in Fiji , I managed care facilities that housed victims of defilement ,rape and domestic violence. There were clients who were old, displaced , disabled and homeless. Caring for people with different kinds of needs became part of my life. What i enjoy most about being a caregiver is that when i see those under my care are happy, fullfilled,content inspite of their medical condition. I enjoy when i see that i had made a difference in someones life. The achievement iam proud of is that in the past i had taken care of very severe dementia clients. I had cared for some clients for above years in a row. I had learnt a lot on the job and that experience i gained is what makes me proud.

Even as a teenager, I had a special affinity for the elderly and still enjoy serving/helping them, talking with them, and learning about their life experiences. I have a B.S. in Nursing and M.A. in Humanistic Psychology. Both of these disciplines require excellent observation skills which I use continuously to assess the mental and physical status of the people I care for. I enjoy working in situations where family is caring and involved and in which communication with family is encouraged. I am an active, healthy 72-year-old widow, mother of an adult son and daughter, and enjoy clogging, crocheting, reading, beading, volunteering and playing classical piano. My experiences as a nurse and mother, and years working with developmentally disabled adults have prepared me for working with those who need care-giving services. But, most importantly, I have a protective heart for the elderly.
