In 2020, I moved backed to my hometown after living in Mexico for three years where I taught English as a Foreign language. At this time, I was asked by my family to become my grandfather's caregiver after he was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. My grandfather has had a series of health complications within the last two years ranging from Mild Cognitive Impairment, diabetes, loss of mobility due to a fall, prostate cancer and a mini stroke. All of these have given me an abundance of knowledge on care directives and strategies to improve overall quality of life. My time providing care for my grandfather has brought back my passion for working as a Caregiver again. As I am a highly empathetic, patient and nurturing individual with experience, I am confident that I can succeed as a Caregiver for your loved one. Hi, I'm Shawna, \"What makes me a great caregiver?\" I've raised six amazing children as a single mother and after 20 years of helping people feel good about themselves in the beauty industry, I took on the role of my 92 year old grandmother's caregiver. I cared for her for two years and I feel I've found my calling. I am, by nature, a very nurturing person so I'm in my element as a caregiver. I have excellent work ethics, I'm organized and very easy to get along with. I have a great respect for the elderly because they have paved the way for me and my children. I only pray that when my time comes, my children will take as good a care of me.

I became a caregiver in August 2009 for my father, Brian. After a series of tests my father was diagnosed with early - stage of cancer. I have always taken care of my father because my mother was never around to provide support to the family. His condition is still in the early stages, but I am worried about the future. This situation brought my father and I closer. His condition has made me realize that this is career move that I wanted to peruse. I am not a caregiver by career but by choice. I am a caregiver that truly cares about helping others and want to make a difference in the lives of seniors and their families. Besides experience and knowledge I acquired from nursing school, helping others has always been my passion. I find joy and fulfillment knowing I make a difference in someone else's life. I am patient and willing to adjust to the needs of my clients. I try to put myself in their shoes, to try and understand them. I treat my patients with love and respect, and with dignity, just like how I would want to be treated if I was in their same situation. Since I was a young age, I have always been interested in helping other people. I enjoy helping others who have trouble helping themselves especially the elderly. I completed my vocational nursing studies in 2012 and it was at that point I realised that helping people is my calling. I love that being a caregiver, you can make a difference. It's a rewarding experience providing care and assistance to those who are no longer able to do so and to know that I have done my job right when I see smiles on their faces. The moments that make me most proud of as a care giver is when I see my patients doing well, seeing their happy faces.
