I became a caregiver because I did not want to work in main stream Healthcare anymore. My passion is helping seniors the way they and their family's want to be cared for without Healthcare systems making the choices for their care. I worked as a physical therapy assistant for 27 years. The last 8 were in a rehabilitation department at a skilled nursing facility. I have enjoyed the last 9 years doing private home care as a caregiver. Helping individuals live their lives with dignity, safety and loving care.

I have always enjoyed working with people and have missed that since retiring from nursing a few years ago. I love getting to know people, finding out their interests and hearing their life stories. I am an upbeat and friendly person and find great joy in being of assistance to others in ways that improve their quality of life and happiness. I grew up in a big family and value those special relationships. I realize a lot of people don't have a big family to rely on and I'm here to help fill that need. (I didn't see a place to mention this, but I am also available to help with your pets.)

In 2017 I graduated from nursing school with the intention of helping people be stay healthy and feel their best. I have been a registered nurse for two years now and am hoping to expand my caregiving career. It is my hope to help people maintain their quality of life and independence safely as they age. I enjoy reading, pets, going for walks, running errands and being out of doors.

I've been a Certified Life & Wellness coach since 1996. After moving to Maine, I opened my private practice in Yarmouth. And started volunteering at ME Handicapped Skiing (now ME Adaptive Sports & Recreation), & with disabled veterans. For reasons beyond my personal control, I had to close my private practice. So I decided to use my skills serving others in a different capacity, this time focusing on the elderly population in Maine as well as Hospice service. I started as a caregiver with 3 different agencies in the Portland area. After 2 yrs, I 'down-sized' to two agencies in order to get certified as a CRMA. Quite often I am asked to start the service with a new client. Several times family members of a 24X7 client requested for me to be the primary caregiver and to coordinate the day to day client needs. In fact, it was commented that "when Maria is out, things really don't go well. As soon as she's back, everything flows so smoothly." My biggest personal achievement was to be selected "VNA's caregiver of the Year 2016". Ive becobecextended famiky to my elderly clients and hospice patients, as they have become to me. I'm honored & feel priviledged to serve my clients/patients at end of life as well as providing respite for family members and guiding them throughout the weeks/days before & after losing a loved one. My life's journey has taken me all over the world. I speak numerous languages, have lived on several continents, learned skiing at 47, ballroom dance competitor at 49, certified diver at 52., and now plan to get my private pilot's license by my 70th Birthday. Having supported my husband and only son during their cancer journeys, I learned that we cannot take anything for granted in life. We must find our own way of living life to the fullest each and every moment. I'm grateful for all the people who have touched my life. Each and every one has been a gift to me as I have been a gift to them. I hope to touch many more lives.

I am an 38 years old black African who's very dedicated, patient, compassionate, attentive, trustworthy person. I had many people in my own family who needed help and assistance. I grew up in an environment that make me to understand what they've been going through and he creates in me the passion and love to aid. Life it's to short and we need to make sure to be there when other needs us. l like making someone smile and doing little things to make a person's day better. You take pride in your attention to detail. You don't want a desk job; you like being physical in your job and using your body as well as your brain. There is many achievement in my life but the best one i believe it's putting a smile in my client face.

It is in my DNA to help. It is what I do best & where I am most content. It is my joy to give others joy in what ever way that is for the individual. I find it a challenge & a blessing to work with a person who may be considered a challenge to work with, & with some good listening skills & some T.L.C. get that person to relax & not be so demanding. A little about me. I have two hobbies that keep me grounded & contribute to my personal & professional life. One is photography, I do mostly nature & wild life, which teaches me patience & being still to listen. Second, refinishing/painting furniture. This allows my creative nature to open & flow, think out side the box. Take something old, dull, maybe not so interesting & bring it back to life , new , bright & fresh. I was raised in a family of all nurses. I had a strong interest in helping others so I took the CNA course. I have been a CNA and have been actively working as a CNA since 2009. I have worked in all different types of settings, such as hospitals. nursing homes, private care duties, group homes, and home care. I love to give back to people that are in need of help. I love it sit and talk with people. I love what I do because it gives back to the community especially the elderly that need the extra help and have worked hard their whole lives. I'm recently married to my best friend. I was born and raised in Aroostook County, Maine until almost 3 years ago I relocated to southern maine for work reasons and of course to be with my now husband. I have an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. Before I was a CNA I was a waitress for almost 5 years. I have great customer service skills. I enjoy reading, learning new things, and being outdoors. I love any outdoors activity.

I currently have 7 years experience in healthcare, graduated with A. A. S. in para-medicine and currently possess a State of Maine paramedic license. I have experience working in hospital ED's, transport services and in emergency services. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree and I am looking for PT work in home care. I have many years of experience working with different age groups both in and outside of healthcare and I have really enjoyed it! I also have the necessary skills that are needed to care for a person with healthcare issues such as medical monitoring, medication administration, nutrition, etc. I also have a solid understanding of the pathology of many different diseases and illness such as diabetes, dementia, heart disease and the like. Most importantly I possess critical thinking skills needed to identify an emergency or changes that may lead to the need for further care. I possess a high degree of both professionalism and empathy. I have a great sense of humor and a ton of life experience. I treat my patients just as I would my own family and friends. I became a caregiver when my father became ill and needed someone to take care of him. I am a retired licensed massage therapist and taking care of people is what I am passionate about. Being a caretaker is a perfect fit for me because I enjoy working with people, I am strong which makes transfers not a problem, helping clients with rehab or exercises comes naturally, I'm a gourmet cook, and am a trained artist so we can always think of a fun project to play around with.
