Hi y'all, my name is Abby Mathis, I was born and raised in a small town in Texas!! Around the age 11 my great grandmother passed away from Alzheimer's. During the years leading up to her death I knew I wanted to one day be able to help men and women just like her. As I got older my love to help people got greater and once I was old enough I started working in the health care industry. After working as receptionist in a doctors office I decided I would rather be hands on with the patients. I took a 4 week class at Christus St Michaels too because a certified PCT. After finishing that class, I started working at St Michaels and I was over the moon excited to be hands on with the patients! Working hands on with all patients only made my love for helping people grow even greater. My whole life I have always wanted to help others before I do anything for my self and working with the patients in the hospital helped me do just that! One thing about me is that I always treat my patients like they are my family especially because many of my family members have been hospitalized and there have been multiple times my family members were not satisfied with their nurses. A personal achievement I want to continue to make is helping my patients get better and achieve their goals!

And the fact that most can't do for themselves and some doesn't have the family to help them makes me want to help even more. I enjoy being a caregiver because it brings happiness and knowing that they have someone here for them when they need it. Knowing that they have the extra help around. A little insight on myself! I have practiced caregiving since 1999, straight out of high school. I have a huge heart and love providing my assistance and care to anyone in need. The elderly really hold my heart, they are just precious. I do not judge and I give respect to all people, with hopes they return the respect. I understand the older ones may have set their ways, and I'm ok with that, after all they have earned it, because of that I have learned to adjust to their ways for each individual client. I'm naturally patient, empathetic, and dependable--traits that have helped me build trust with both clients and families. My years of experience have also sharpened my ability to recognize subtle changes in behavior or health, especially in memory care. I stay calm under pressure, and I always try to bring comfort and dignity to those I care for. ------ 2. What attracted you to being a caregiver? I've always had a heart for helping people, especially those who need extra support. What drew me into caregiving was the opportunity to make a real difference in someone's daily life--whether that's helping them stay independent or simply being a source of kindness and conversation. It felt like a calling, not just a job. ------ 3. What do you enjoy most about being a caregiver? The relationships. I enjoy getting to know each client and their unique personality, history, and preferences. Being able to brighten someone's day, even with something small like a meal they enjoy or a shared laugh, brings me a deep sense of purpose. ------ 4. What is a personal achievement you are proud of? I'm proud of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant and maintaining a 10-year career in caregiving. It hasn't always been easy, but I've stayed committed because I love what I do. I've also helped clients recover from surgery, regain mobility, and remain in their homes longer--and those are accomplishments I hold close to my heart.

I COME FROM A BACKGROUND OF GRANDPARENTS THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH DEMENTIA, CANCER AND STROKES ALONG WITH MULTIPLE OTHER HEALTH ISSUES. I LOST MY MOM IN 2019 DUE TO A HEART ATTACK AND MY GRANDMOTHER IN 2019 DUE TO Alzheimer's DISEASE. I FELT BETRAYED AND THOUGHT WHY ME, BUT TODAY I FEEL LIKE IT PUSHED ME TO BE MORE UNDERSTANDING AND TO HELP THE FAMILIES THAT ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING IN LIFE, BECAUSE ITS ONE OF THE HARDEST THINGS TO WATCH YOUR LOVED ONE GO THROUGH WITHOUT SUPPORT OR SOMEONE THEY CAN TRUST TO CARE FOR THERE LOVED ONES LIKE THERE OWN, SO I PERSONALLY UNDERSTAND AND WANNA HELP AND TAKE CARE OF SOME OF THE HEAVY RESPONSIBILITIES THAT ARE NEW AND HARD TO COPE WITH. TO MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE THEY ARE NOT ALONE AND CAN TRUST IN THE PERSON TAKING CARE OF THERE LOVED ONES HEALTH AND HOME.
