I love being able to provide an atmosphere of hospitality and becoming close with the people I take care of. I started doing this profession when my sister was dying of cancer, I took care of her every day during her final days. What I loved about doing that, is feeling needed. She relied on me for everything, to be her comfort, to wash her hair, to make her laugh and smile. I'm very much a people person & highly empathetic. I knew I wanted to be a caretaker/Nurse since high school working as a volunteer in local hospital. I come from a family of caretakers so it's in my genetics. I've done many aspects of caregiving from rooming patients in local clinic to skilled unit in nursing facility & Alzheimer's unit. I love geriatric care due to the respect I have for the elderly. They've earned it for surviving through hardships I've only read about & learned in history class, which brings me to the fact that they have the best stories to tell if able to. Families in Minnesota, FYI, just a heads up about the new Home care laws: Think twice before hiring a caregiver without the supervision of a licensed agency in Minnesota. The State of Minnesota requires any unlicensed direct caregivers (including Certified Nursing Assistants) to have a license...please be sure to check that this is in place prior to hiring them.
