My name is Mariam Alaka, and I've been a caregiver for 8 years. I've worked in adult family homes, senior living centers, and caregiving agencies, and I've cared for people of all ages and medical conditions, including those with disabilities. My talents to communicate well with the people I am caring for and to ensure that I am doing my best in taking care of the individual are some of the personality attributes that make me a great caregiver. In addition, as a caregiver, I strive to be patient so that my interactions with the people run easily. I also do my best to empathize with the people I care for so that they feel welcomed and appreciated. I also do my best to pay attention to small details so that if a problem arises, I can identify it ahead of time and communicate with other people to try to solve it. What drew me to become a caregiver was the opportunity to care for others. I enjoy assisting others, and this was an opportunity to do so. The talks I can have with the folks I am caring for are one of my favorite aspects of being a caregiver. Most older people are in vulnerable situations, relying on others to look after them, and it is critical that they have someone they can trust and communicate to. I learn a lot from the elderly, and if they inquire, they learn a lot about myself and my cultural background.
