Currently I live in Prudenville, Mi. My family is relocating to Fremont at the beginning of May. It is very hard for me to leave my current job because I have been with some of my residents for 5 years now. They have become a second family to me. I love the relationships I have built with my people. My father in law passed away suddenly 8 years ago, that was what sparked my interest in care giving. I wanted to make a difference, to learn, to give back to the elderly. When I started my job I had no clue what I was getting myself into. I was a parent but hadn't cared for elderly people. This has made me a better person, I have a softer approach to life now. The difficulties have made me more patient, caring, and understanding.

I truly love being a caregiver and helping my client. I treat my clients how I'd want my parents and grandparents to be treated. When I first became a caregiver for veterans I was excited to help and give back for all they have done for us and our country. To make somebody's day better and make them feel good about themselves is a great feeling to be able to have a hand in that. I'm especially proud of being able to save my clients' life. I showed up for my time with him and he was in his fenced-in backyard on the ground. He was almost 90 years old and he went outside with his dog (whom he loved so very much) the night before and ended up falling and he laid there calling for help all night, for about 18 hrs.) but none of the neighbors heard him unfortunately. He didn't even know that it rained the night before and he was so severely dehydrated. That was my first time ever being able to save somebody's life and luckily I had a shift that day with him and found him. I called 911 and his family member, to take care of his dog. I was beyond scared but I had a hand in saving his life and he was so happy to see me, thank God that he got terrific care and I found him in time. That was an unbelievably rewarding experience and it made me proud of my being a caregiver.

I am seasoned female health care worker with 31 yrs of DCW experience from private home care to multiple bed homes for the elderly. I prefer private care because I don't have to divide my time between multiple clients as I feel clients don't get addiquite care (care facilities). It is rewarding for me to give the elderly piece of mind and quality care.

Surprisingly enough, in caring for my mom and pastor's mom the last 18 months of their lives, I found I'm very patient with the elderly. Both women had dementia as well. Doing crafts or something creatively "fun" was enjoyable. There is SOO much need for the elderly! My heart goes out to them, especially those who don't have family or their family lives far away. I'm an extrovert who loves to laugh. It's important to find the humor in life. It's also important to help the person retain their dignity, especially if incontinent, which can be humiliating to the patient. After caring for both women, they both died within 3 months of each other. I had quit my job to care for my mom full time and home health was an easy segue back into working full time. I enjoy getting to know new people and hearing their "story" as everyone has a story. I play the piano and saxophone, and my patients always lived hearing one or the other. I'm pretty laid back and easy going.
