I became a caregiver first and foremost for the flexibility of the the job. When my kids were younger, this career gave me the opportunity to be home with them and work nights. I moved on to becoming an Administrative Assistant for more than 18 years. I was laid off from my job due to the last recession and I jumped back on my skills to continue giving care to the elderly. I enjoy helping the elderly in all walks of life. Some of the qualities I have are: I am compassionate, I get along with people, I am conscientious, reliable, and above all trust worthy. I was a valuable support for my clients, helping then with all the activities of their daily living, I cooked and served meals, I assisted with medications, I shopped for food and personal items, I provided transport/ accompanied clients to doctor's appointments. I was with one of my clients last year and realized that she needed to go to the hospital. I called the emergency service and stayed with her at the hospital till the family made alternative arrangement. When she was later discharged, I stayed and cared for her till she passed. I have now become a trusted friend of the family.

I took care of my sick mother until she passed away. Later, a friend introduced me to the field of caregiving. Though I had formerly been a school teacher, caregiving fit like a glove. When my client was dying, I held her hand the entire time, not knowing that the daughter had entered the room and observed my action. After her death I received a note from the daughter describing how she had been touched by my action. My current job involves caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their homes. I'm a patient and compassionate person, I love to be around elderly. They are very smart and full of wisdom. I feel like I'm the lucky one to be with them and help them through this step of life. Even when they rejected me, I never took it personal and tried to understand them.
