Caring for people seems to come naturally, taking care of my grandma before she passed is what taught me the job, seeing all the ways that I didn't want her treated, taught me to report the negligent caretakers, and if I didn't want them to do it I better get there early enough, to bathe/ dress/feed/make her feel good in spite of what she could no longer do for herself , and keep her private space tidy. I base my care on how she was to be treated. What I like about my job is the reward of seeing them slowly regain strength, and independence again, through range of motion / physical day to day assisted exercise/ and loving care, good meals everyday help too. One of my personal achievements was when the person who I had to personally hand feed, and dress , as well as use a standing lift to lift her from her chair to check dryness, began to reach for the spoon to feed herself when her favorite spoon fills of ice-cream weren't coming fast enough, so she took over and surprised herself ! then she grew tired of her hairstyle and took the brush! I totally didn't mind. physical therapy helped strengthen her to hold on to the bars of the standing lift to pull herself up to show me she was wet behind her! she was ready to go home! and she grew older. if you treat someone like an invalid and do every single thing for them, they stop doing it, and lose the ability, were to give hope, and sometimes encourage them to want these abilities back with patience and well thought out care.
