A personal trait or expertise that helps me be a great caregiver would be treating the patient the same way I'd want my mother or father to be treated. One thing I have learned about myself throughout my nursing career is how much I enjoy the elderly population. I have experience in large nursing homes, small home to individual care. The intimacy of individual care has me hooked! Really getting to know a person, what they really enjoy, that's what it is all about. I was lucky enough to have had my grandparents in my life till a couple years ago. I took care of them at the end, as tough as it was, they had a beautiful end of life. To me, that is the most important thing. To allow and encourage them to do what makes them happy while offering the support they need. That could be something simple like having that favorite meal, going for a ride to a favorite place, or just having someone to talk to. It is my responsibility to ensure they are able to enjoy life, and I am committed to doing all I can to make them smile each day.

I have held hands while the elderly passed. Some times the families just can't deal with their loved ones passing, and that's where I need to be strong and my most understanding.
