The number one thing I enjoy most about being a caregiver is knowing that I'm helping to make someone else's day just that much easier and or enjoyable. I've met some of the most interesting and grateful people working in my role as a caregiver. Whether it was a simple task that has to be done or one that requires a little more skillfulness, at the end of it all was improved quality of life for someone in need. I love cooking and being creative in the kitchen, trying new recipes and learning from more experienced cooks. Gardening and growing my own food feeds right into that love for cooking nutritional meals. Watching others enjoy them is a bonus. I'm compassionate, a good listener and understanding. Everyone has a story to tell and I'm happy to slow down and engage. One personal achievement I'm proud of is going back to school and getting my Associate Degree. I'd been on and off with college for a very long time and it felt good to stick with a topic of interest until the end. It's introduced me to like-minded people and continues to help me in my volunteer ventures in our community and food system.

As a child I grew up working with my mom at hospitals and nursing homes while she was a CNA. By the time I reached High School I knew what I wanted to do, take care of people and show love to the people who need it most. I decided to get my license early in High School so that my first job ever would be my career. I became a certified nursing assistant because my grandma has dementia and I wanted to learn more about the illness and understand what she was going through . I also became a caregiver because I have a lot of patience and I love working with elderly! What I love about being a caregiver is you have time to really get to know your resident on a deeper level. I have worked in nursing homes before and you don't have time to connect with your residents, talk to them about their past, or even spend and extra 30 minutes doing their hair. It seems like everything is so rushed in a nursing home. Where as being a caregiver and caring for elderly in their home you have time to take them shopping, do their hair, play games, and talk about their past and really connect with them.
