Growing up, I always enjoyed helping others and found joy in making someone life easier and fulfilling. Seeing a smile on the others faces brings happiness to me and makes me feel like I have done something right. As a certified teacher, I am satisfied I have done a good job when I see my students smiles and confidence after accomplishing someone through my help and guidance. My career as a teacher drives me to want to help others outside of the classroom. The event that sparked my desire to become a caregiver is when my mom was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. I knew I wanted nothing more than to help her and serve her in anyway possible in her last days of life. Her desire was for me to be with her every step of the way from doctor appointments, dressing, bathing, and scheduling appointments. She refused to be cared for by nurses. She knew I would show her the compassion and care she needed. I know if I was able to do this for my mom, I could show the same care for others. Every professional needs to embody particular characteristics and traits that make them stand out and great at that profession. As a caregiver, compassion is one of the important characteristics along with empathy. Having empathy and compassion shows people you care for them on a deeper level in order to help them. Moreover, having patience in every situation and scenario as well as being trustworthy because people receiving care are in a vulnerable position who invite you into their home, private space, and family. Lastly, as a caregiver, on needs to be reliable and flexible. People receiving care depend on you to be there when they need you. This means being there to provide the care on a scheduled basis and unexpected basis.
