I cared for my mother for 5 years until she passed from cancer. During this time I really began to understand that aside from assisting her in the day to day necessities there was something much more important that I became keenly aware of and that was the importance of preserving her dignity. I learned from this experience that helping her to keep her dignity in tact was probably more important than anything else I did for her. It really amounts to treating someone with the same respect you would like to be treated with if you were in a similar situation. I have used what I learned from personal experience to help others to maintain their own sense of self worth. If you respect them while also giving them the sense that they are still in control of their own lives and decisions they respond positively and consequently do better. It is so important for a person to feel they are being respected. This, along with true kindness patience and compassion can impact the quality of life of the person who becomes dependant on another for help. There is not a more vulnerable feeling. Understanding this and working from this premise has enabled me to provide genuine quality care for others as well. As for me, I am a person who considers herself a quality caregiver with lots of love and compassion to share. I conduct myself with utmost professionalism and understand client confidentiality is extremely important. This type of position is more of a calling for me than a job. You
