About Bethanie

During my childhood years, caring for my elderly grandparents was a part of my everyday life. They had several health issues and were in and out of hospitals frequently. I was exposed to caregivers in many different settings. The impact that kind, compassionate and informative care-giving made all the difference to me and my family. At the age of 12, I knew nursing was what I wanted to do with my life. As I pursued nursing, I started out caring for patients in a nursing home as a nursing assistant. I loved this, as I got to care for clients, just like my grandparents. The opportunity to establish connections with clients week-to-week was special! After nursing school, I moved to caring for patients in a hospital setting as a Registered Nurse. The hospital experiences have given me a broad scope of skills, whether it is assisting patients with basic self-care needs, changing dressings, managing ventilators or providing education, being able to establish a rapport with patients and their family's is still one of the favorite parts of my job. I love being able to help people understand what is going on with their health and their treatment plan. Just as others demonstrated to my own family, I want each of my clients and their family members to feel safe, cared for and heard.

Experience & Education

Registered Nurse

Jan 2013 - Present
Hospital
The majority of my experience with this hospital is with patients in Critical Care (ICU). I have worked in an ICU for the last 7yrs now. These types of clients are usually admitted because they are very ill and need very close monitoring and care (such as patients needing a breathing machine or patients who have had open heart surgery). This experience has given me lots of experience working with oxygen devices (such as cpap/bipaps and ventilators), feeding tubes, dialysis machines, etc. One of the favorite parts of this job is being able to develop a relationship with my clients and their family's members and help them understand what is going on with them and the care they are receiving.

Registered Nurse

May 2012 - Dec 2012
Hospital
My role as a Registered Nurse here was to care for patients who were admitted to the hospital with general medical issues (such as, pnuemonia or diabetes), surgical procedures (such as hip surgery), and those with heart conditions (such congestive heart failure or needed pacemakers). This experience provided me with the ability to easily assess clients based upon their specific needs and to help prevent them from developing any complications. Skills not only included helping patients with their medications, but also with other needs, such as dressing changes, catheters, ostomies and tracheostomy care and monitoring heart rhythms.
May 2012 - Dec 2012

CNA

Jun 2011 - Jun 2012
Long Term Care
As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) I was able to help elderly clients not only with completing self-care needs, such as dressing, bathing, feeding, and using the restroom, but also spending time reminiscing or talking about their day. I enjoyed my time as an aid not only because it helped enhance my skills as a nurse, but also because of the connection that was established when caring for the same patients day-to-day.

I have been a CNA for 10 years, and have worked in all different situations in many different facilities. I aspire to go further with my nursing degree, and eventually, hopefully become an RN like my mom. I enjoy being a caregiver because it gives me a sense of purpose, I enjoy helping people. Many life lessons held dearest to my heart, came from the facility where I worked my first 2 years as a CNA. I currently work PRN for an agency based out of Indianapolis. Although I am through an agency, I have been steadily picking up at a facility in Franklin for over 5 years. I am searching for a PRN or part time option closer to home. I look forward to hearing from you!
